Entry into the War
- The Spark: On June 26, 1941, unidentified aircraft bombed the town of Kassa (now Košice), an event the Hungarian government blamed on the Soviet Union.
- Declaration of War: Prompted by this provocation, Hungary declared war on the Soviet Union on June 27, 1941.
- Initial Hesitation: Budapest initially wanted to limit its involvement, keeping most of its main military forces at home to guard against regional rivals like Romania.
- The Carpathian Group: Formed from border and mountain units.
- The Mobile Corps: The most powerful element sent east, featuring armored, motorized, bicycle, and cavalry units.
- Border Clashes: Fighting alongside German forces, the Mobile Corps engaged withdrawing Red Army units in early July 1941.
- Battle for Uman: In July and August 1941, Hungarian troops helped block Soviet breakout attempts during the encirclement battle near Uman.
- Dnieper Operations: The units faced heavy pressure from Soviet counter-attacks during defensive operations along the River Dnieper from late August through early October 1941.
